Supporting students and staff: The LGBTQ+ Allies Scheme

Have you noticed some members of staff wearing a rainbow lanyard around campus and wondered what it means?

Well, it’s more than just a rainbow. The lanyard signals that the staff member has chosen to join the staff LGBTQ+ Allies scheme.

What is the staff LGBTQ+ Allies scheme?

It is a voluntary scheme for staff who would like to become an active LGBTQ+ Ally and support LGBTQ+ inclusion. Over 200 members of staff have so far joined the scheme, and the number is growing.

How can the scheme support you?

Staff wearing a rainbow lanyard may be able to support students and colleagues by:

  • Offering a listening ear without judgment for LGBTQ+ related concerns
  • Signposting to internal or external LGBTQ+ resources
  • Answering some general, respectful questions about LGBTQ+ topics

Think of the scheme as an informal source of support, rather than a replacement for formal or professional support.

Look out for the rainbow lanyard around campus.

So next time you spot a staff member wearing a rainbow lanyard around campus, remember it’s more than just a rainbow. The lanyard represents active allyship, inclusion and solidarity. It means that the staff member is approachable and able to listen, signpost and support you if you need it.

And finally, for staff.
