The Value of Volunteering: A Day in My Life at Citizens Advice
Have you ever thought about volunteering? Many people searching for a job focus solely on applications and interviews, but I always encourage them to volunteer. It is a fantastic way to contribute positively to society while gaining valuable experience that could lead to a paid role. In fact, some people end up getting hired where they volunteer!
Although I have a paid job, I still volunteer. Currently, I dedicate my time to Citizens Advice, a charity committed to ensuring people have access to impartial and fair advice to help them make informed decisions. I chose this organisation because its mission resonates with me, and it aligns with my career aspirations.
Volunteering brings me a deep sense of fulfilment. Beyond the knowledge and experience I gain, the support from both paid staff and fellow volunteers is incredibly motivating. The collaborative environment ensures that I am equipped with the guidance needed to make a real difference in people’s lives.
A Typical Day as a Volunteer Advisor
I volunteer on Fridays from 10 AM to 3 PM, and no two days are ever the same. My role involves assisting clients with various issues, including benefits inquiries, homelessness applications, employment challenges, and consumer concerns. Each case is unique; requiring a thorough study to understand the nature of the problem and uncover additional support options the client may not have considered.
While most of my consultations happen over the phone, some clients request information via email. If necessary, I follow up with a phone call to ensure I have all the details required to provide the best possible advice.
Before finalising any case, I review it with my supervisor, who guides me toward the most relevant resources. Afterwards, I compile a report, which is then reviewed before sending a follow-up email to the client, summarising our discussion and the recommended steps.
Most days, I grab lunch after my shift ends at 3 PM, sometimes opting for a quick meal from the nearby mall. It is a routine that balances productivity with personal comfort, making my volunteering experience more rewarding.
This is not just an act of service for me, it is an opportunity for growth, connection, and making a meaningful impact. If you have ever thought about volunteering, I highly encourage you to give it a try. You never know how much impact you can make or how much you will grow along the way.

Hi there! My name is Temiladejesu, but most people call me Temi (pronounced just as it looks). I am a Nigerian, which makes me an international student. I am studying law and I'm currently on my journey to becoming a solicitor. I am always open to making friends from all walks of life and in line with my values.
I love God and everything that revolves around Him. I also love helping people, guiding them to make right decisions is my passion. I have a YouTube channel where I upload vlogs about my everyday life. I enjoy dancing, even though I am not the best at it. I like getting involved in volunteering activities, which is one of the things I am known for at Uni. I believe in giving back to society, and for me, volunteering through my time and service is a way of doing so, as I do not yet have money to give back. |
