🎄 What Christmas means to me 🎁
Christmas has taken on a whole new meaning for me since I started university. When I was younger, it was all about the thrill of presents, delicious food, and that delightful break from school. But now, as a busy uni student, it feels like a precious pause in my hectic routine - a moment to step back from the whirlwind of lectures, assignments, and endless deadlines. It’s that special time of year when everything slows down just enough for me to catch my breath.
Last year, heading home for Christmas after wrapping up all my lectures and
practicals in a single week was such a relief! Even though I knew exam season
was just around the corner, I could finally relax and have some quality time
with my family. It was particularly special because it was our first Christmas
with our dog, Oscar. His excitement was contagious, and he explored all the
presents under our Christmas tree.
One thing that really stood out to me was the sight of our Christmas tree,
packed with gifts. It struck me how meaningful that simple image was. It wasn’t
about how much was spent, but rather the thought and care behind each gift. It
reminded me that the spirit of Christmas is truly about connection.
And then there’s the Christmas dinner! My family never fails to impress with a
feast that includes turkey, roast potatoes, pigs in blankets, stuffing,
Yorkshire puddings, gravy, carrots, Brussels sprouts, and, of course, Christmas
pudding for dessert. Pulling Christmas crackers before we eat is a cherished
tradition; those silly paper crowns, cheesy jokes, and quirky little toys never
fail to bring laughter, regardless of how old we get.
Being at Herts has deepened my appreciation for these moments. University life
can be exhilarating but also quite intense, and I often don’t realise how worn
out I am until I’m home. Christmas truly feels like that reset button I need -
a chance to slow down, reconnect, and remember who I am beyond being busy all
the time.
Now that I’m older, I find myself valuing the quieter moments even more.
Sitting in the living room, by the Christmas tree in the evenings, either by
myself or with my brother, with the house calm, the best selected movie or soft
music playing from the soundbar, and that cosy warmth filling the air while
it’s freezing outside, brings me a simple kind of peace that means more to me
than ever.
It’s funny how our perspective on Christmas evolves as we grow up. As kids,
it’s all about the excitement and presents. As teenagers, it’s about sleeping
in and indulging in too much food. But now, as an undergrad student, it’s all
about gratitude - appreciating my family, the delicious meals, having a home to
return to, and taking a moment to pause before the new year kicks in.
So, what does Christmas mean to me these days? It’s quite simple: peace,
connection, and appreciation. It’s that magical time of year when everything
slows down a bit, life feels more soothing, and being at home - whether
together with family or hanging out with friends - reminds us of what truly
matters. It's a beautiful chance to cherish each other and create those
wonderful memories!
