Welwyn Hatfield Civic Awards 2020

Two of our students, Fiona Montgomery and Ciara Brown have both been presented awards at the fourteenth annual Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council Civil Awards. The Young Person Award, sponsored by The University of Hertfordshire, recognises the achievements of people under the age of 21. Also involved in the event was our own Geraldine Ward, Dean of Students who served as a member of the judging panel.

Ciara won the Young Person Award for her achievements during her time as a student at the University. She has been praised for her incredible determination and personal ambition, strong ethics and social values.

As a student, Ciara has helped organise teach-ins and social media groups and has founded her own company called Universal Discoveries, helping to nurture young talent in STEMM subjects from schools without the relevant expertise in these areas. She also played a role in championing ‘Women in Physics’ events within her school. A truly inspiring person who embodies the University’s graduate attributes!

Fiona was also recognised for her enterprising nature, professionalism and inspiring work as a Student Ambassador. Consistently showing great empathy and selflessness, she has been known to go above and beyond at University Open Days.

As a student with cerebral palsy, Fiona has never let her condition affect her motivation or achievements. Keen to share her passion for Boccia, she planned and delivered an inspiring interactive lecture. Her national involvement with this sport, played by athletes with severe physical impairments, shows her commitment to inclusivity.

Congratulations to Fiona and Ciara, an amazing achievement!
