How I Landed My Job as a Wi-Fi Warrior: What I’ve Learned and Why It’s Worth It

After finishing my m
aster’s degree, I was looking for a part-time job that offered experience and flexibility. That’s when I came across the Wi-Fi Warrior role at the University of Hertfordshire. I ended up working in the role three times, each for about three months during new student enrolment. It turned out to be one of the best decisions I made.

How I Got the Job

I found the Wi-Fi Warrior position through the university’s job portal. My previous experience as a student guide, along with completing two master's degrees at the same university, helped me stand out. I had a good understanding of student needs and the campus, which made it easier to support others. After an online interview where I discussed my communication skills and experience, I was offered the job.

What Wi-Fi Warriors Do

Wi-Fi Warriors support students and staff with Wi-Fi and Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) issues. But that’s not all—we also help with accessing online meetings, using the university’s website and app, and getting students ready for their study journey. We work closely with the Welcome Desk to support with printing, laptop loans, and guiding people around campus.

Problem-solving is a big part of the job. Many students come to us with login issues, module access problems, or difficulties submitting assignments. Helping them resolve these problems is very rewarding.

Training and Support

Yes—full training is provided. We receive step-by-step guides on how to fix common issues, and team leads are always available to support us. Even without a technical background, you’ll learn everything you need to know.

What I’ve Learned

This job helped me improve my communication and problem-solving skills. I learned how to explain technical issues clearly to people who may not be familiar with digital systems. I also became more confident in working independently and as part of a team. When faced with tricky issues, we often helped each other out, building teamwork and adaptability.

A Moment I’ll Never Forget

One student couldn’t log into her account for several days because of an MFA problem. She couldn’t access her modules and join online meetings. After I resolved the issue, she was so relieved she nearly cried and gave me a hug, saying, “You saved my life.” Moments like that show how much of a difference we can make.

Why You Should Apply

If you’re a student or recent graduate looking for flexible work that’s meaningful and builds your CV, I highly recommend becoming a Wi-Fi Warrior. You’ll gain valuable experience in IT support, communication, and customer service, all while helping others settle into university life.

Recruitment usually takes place before each academic year, so keep an eye on the university’s job site. If you enjoy solving problems, working with people, and learning new skills, this might be the perfect role for you.
