Tips for Overcoming Culture Shock

Joining Herts as an international student? Sarosh, a Data Science student from Pakistan, talks about tips from his experience as an international student to help you ace yours!

Keep in Touch with Family & Friends

I try to call my family at least once a week, usually on weekends when we’re all free. Even just hearing their voices or getting a quick WhatsApp message makes a big difference. We talk about everyday things, like what they cooked or what’s happening back home. It helps me feel less homesick and reminds me that I’m not alone, even if I’m far away.

Create a Routine

At first my days felt a bit unstructured, and time would just pass without me realising. So, I started doing small things like waking up at the same time, planning meals, and setting certain days for laundry or grocery shopping. It wasn’t a strict schedule, but having some routine helped me stay focused and made life feel more normal especially on days when I missed home.

Bring Familiar Items from Home

I packed a few things that reminded me of home. Some Pakistani snacks, a watch my mum gave me, and a small cross I always keep by my bed. They didn’t take up much space but having them around made my room feel more personal and comforting, especially on days when I was feeling low or homesick.

Cook Food from Home

I tried making my mum’s chicken curry one weekend it didn’t taste exactly like hers, but close enough! Sharing it with some of my flatmates helped me feel proud of my culture. It was also a good way to start conversations and bond over food.

Talk About Your Feelings

There were days when I felt really down. So, I ended up talking to my flatmate about it, and it turned out he was going through the same thing. It made me realise I wasn’t alone in feeling this way. Later, I also found out that the university had support services, and they were really helpful. Just having someone to talk to made a huge difference.

Celebrate Your Culture

I recently took part in a cultural night at university where I wore traditional clothes. It felt amazing to represent where I come from and made me feel proud of my identity. Sharing your culture can help you feel more rooted and remind you of your strengths.
