Study Smarter, Not Harder: My Exam Season Wellbeing Toolkit

Let’s talk about the part of studying that’s often ignored but makes all the difference: your wellbeing. If you’re anything like me, you’ve probably pushed through all-nighters thinking “this is what hard work looks like.” Spoiler alert: it’s not. Burnout isn’t a badge of honourit’s a roadblock.

Here’s what I’ve learned about staying sane while chasing good grades.

🧠 A Personal Story: The Semester I Burned Out

In my second year, I hit a wall. I had three assignments due the same week, an exam right after, and I hadn’t left my room in days. I thought skipping sleep meant I was being productive. But during one all-nighter, I fell asleep on my laptop—literally—and missed a submission window. That was a wake-up call. I realised that no grade was worth sacrificing my health. Since then, I’ve made wellbeing a core part of my study strategy.

🌿 My Wellbeing Toolkit

  1. Walks = Brain Reset
    • Even a 10-minute walk outside can clear mental fog. No revision notes, no screens—just fresh air and movement. It’s like pressing a reset button on my brain.
  2. Sleep Is Sacred
    • I used to think sleep was optional during exam season. Now I know better: a tired brain is a slow brain. I aim for at least 7 hours, even during deadlines. It’s not always perfect—but when I prioritise rest, everything else works better.
  3. Breathing + Breaks = Balance
    • Whether it’s a five-minute meditation, stretching like a sleepy cat, or just closing my eyes and breathing deeply, these small pauses recharge me. They keep me grounded when everything feels a bit much.
  4. Nourishment > Caffeine
    • Yes, I love a good iced coffee. But I’ve learned that skipping meals or eating only snacks leads to crashes. I try to eat real meals—even if it’s just a quick rice bowl or a sandwich. Fuel = focus.
  5. Digital Boundaries
    • I love a scroll session, but sometimes it adds to the pressure. So, I give myself set “scroll times” and use tools like website blockers when I need deep focus.
  6. You’re Not Alone
    • One of the best things I’ve done during stressful times? Reach out. Whether it’s emailing a lecturer for clarity, chatting with a course mate, or visiting the Wellbeing Team—support exists. You’re not expected to do this alone. If it ever feels like too much, talk to someone. Your mental health matters more than any mark.

💛 Final Words

Wellbeing isn’t a luxury during exam season—it’s the foundation. Take care of your mind and body like you would your coursework. Rest is productive. Breaks are essential. You’ve got this, one breath and one step at a time.
