How I’m Using Summer to Grow (Without Burning Out)

Summer breaks are often seen as a time to unwind, travel, or catch up on shows we never had time for during the school year. But for me, this summer is all about growth—just in ways that don’t always show up on a résumé.

Right now, I’m working full-time in a salad factory, putting in 12-hour shifts almost every day. It’s not exactly aligned with my course of study, and honestly, it’s physically demanding. However, when I couldn’t secure an internship, mostly because I was still in my first year and not considered "qualified enough”, I decided I didn’t want to waste the summer waiting for opportunities—I wanted to make the most of it. So, I took the job. And while it’s not glamorous, it’s teaching me a lot: how to be disciplined, how to manage my energy, and how to find pride in simply showing up and doing my best.

I also moved to a new city—Portsmouth—for the job. Moving somewhere unfamiliar on my own was nerve-racking at first, but it’s been such an eye-opener. Living in a new place teaches you things textbooks can’t: how to be independent, how to make a place your own, and how to find joy in the little discoveries.

For example, I’ve been spending time by the seaside here, which has become one of my favorite ways to unwind after long shifts. Something is calming about the ocean breeze and watching the waves that makes me feel grounded. I’ve also found this cozy little coffee shop tucked away on a quiet street—perfect for journaling, editing videos, or just reflecting. Little routines like these make a city start to feel like home.

Another big shift for me this summer: I’ve started making content again. Before university, I used to create regularly, but once classes started, I paused. Now that I have a bit more mental space, I’m dancing again—and recording videos of it. Dancing has always been something I love, and expressing myself through movement just feels right. Reconnecting with that part of myself has been incredibly fulfilling.

I’ve also set some personal goals for the summer—simple but meaningful ones:

  • Stick to a consistent sleep schedule, even with long shifts.
  • Upload at least one dance video per week.
  • Explore a new place in Portsmouth every weekend.

Right now, I’m learning how to manage my time better, how to be consistent with my passions, and most importantly, how to give myself grace when things don’t go according to plan.

Growth doesn’t always look like certificates or internships. Sometimes, it’s just about becoming more you. I am working hard, creating again, discovering a new city, and becoming a stronger version of myself. And to me, that’s time well spent.
